What I am Reading

11/29/2012

-- So, I think that it is important to show students that adults read too! I am not just making you read these books because I am an evil English teacher, but because I really believe that it is a way to become a successful and high-functioning member of society! With that in mind, I just wanted to always keep you guys updated on what I am reading (Big and small).

Invisible Man- Ralph Ellison.
-- Published in 1952, Invisible Man, widely considered by many to be a classic, and the best book written by an African-American writer. Influenced by Jazz music and the Harlem Renaissance, Ellison produced a work that is relevant to everyone. This book addresses a question that everyone asks themselves at one time or another: "Who Am I?"

A brilliant orator and intellectual, the narrator (we are never given a name) recounts his life growing up in the deep South and his move to Harlem, New York. Along the way, he finds himself in many interesting, humorous, and, at times, precarious scenarios. Multiple speeches, battle royales, factory disasters, and political rallies are just some of the things IM (invisible man) faces on his quest to learn about himself and his potential. All of these will help him determine what it truly means to be, Invisible.

"CPS boss proposes 5-year moratorium on school closings"

-- As many of you know, there have been teacher strikes in Chicago recently. It has resulted in all kinds of chaos for everyone involved. Due to the sensitive nature of this argument, I leave my personal opinion out, but I will say it is something interesting that people should be aware of. Chicago ,right now, can speak to the greater idea of where schools, educators, and policy makers are right now on issues of education.
